Eight teams remain in Poland, where the pursuit of the trophy continues a tournament tradition that helped launch Christine Sinclair, Asisat Oshoala and Salma Paralluelo.
Nigeria kept Africa’s title hopes alive, Brazil eliminated the United States on penalties and defending champions DPR Korea advanced as the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup reached its quarter-final stage.
Korea Republic, Italy, Brazil, Spain, DPR Korea, Canada, Nigeria and Colombia emerged from the round of 16, setting up four matches on September 19 and 20.
Nigeria delivered one of the round’s most decisive performances, defeating England 3–0 to secure a meeting with Colombia. The South Americans edged Poland 1–0, ending the hosts’ campaign. Canada beat France 3–1, while DPR Korea overcame Japan 2–0 in a rematch of the 2024 final.
Brazil’s passage was considerably tighter. After a 1–1 draw through extra time, they defeated the United States 5–4 in the shootout. Italy also advanced on penalties, overcoming China PR by the same shootout score following a 1–1 draw. Spain defeated Portugal 2–0, and Korea Republic beat Argentina 1–0.

The winners of Korea Republic–Italy and Brazil–Spain will meet in one semi-final. The other will bring together the winners of DPR Korea–Canada and Nigeria–Colombia. Both semi-finals take place on September 23, followed by the third-place match on September 26 and the final on September 27 in Łódź.
For Nigeria, the closing stages carry particular historical significance. The Falconets reached the final in 2010 and 2014, losing to Germany on both occasions. Their second run produced an outstanding individual campaign from Asisat Oshoala, whose seven goals earned her the Golden Boot alongside the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player
DPR Korea bring a different legacy: three championships. Their 2024 triumph featured a 17-year-old match-winner, Choe Il-son, who scored the only goal against Japan in the final and finished with six goals. That victory placed DPR Korea alongside Germany and the United States on three titles apiece.
Japan’s departure ends the campaign of a nation that reached three consecutive finals in 2018, 2022 and 2024. They won the first against Spain, lost the second to the same opponents and finished runners-up to DPR Korea in the third.
Those previous editions offer a reminder of what can follow a breakthrough at this level. Christine Sinclair scored eleven goals at the inaugural tournament in Canada in 2002, when the competition was played at under-19 level. She collected both the Golden Boot and Golden Ball before becoming one of the defining figures in Canadian football.
Spain’s Salma Paralluelo took an even more unusual route. Once a promising sprinter and hurdler, she chose football and won World Cup titles at under-17, under-20 and senior level. By 19, she had become the first player across the women’s and men’s games to complete that treble.
Her under-20 triumph also revealed the pressure behind the performances. After Spain’s 2022 semi-final victory, Paralluelo cried over missed chances. Supported by teammates and staff, she responded with two goals in the 3–1 final win over Japan.
Now the remaining teams in Poland face the same opportunity: to compete for a world title while giving their young players a stage on which careers can change.
