Indomitable Lionesses book Brazil 2027 ticket as Africa’s title race takes another dramatic turn

CASABLANCA, Morocco Africa will crown a new women’s football champion after Cameroon eliminated defending champions Nigeria from the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, securing their place in the semi-finals and a ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Cameroon’s 1–0 quarter-final victory in Casablanca was one of the defining results of the tournament. Nigeria entered the knockout stage carrying the weight of their extraordinary WAFCON history and the status of defending champions, but Cameroon delivered when the stakes were at their highest.
The result means Nigeria’s title defence is over and guarantees that a different nation will lift the continental trophy when the tournament concludes in Morocco on August 16.
For Cameroon, however, the night delivered two rewards.
A place among Africa’s final four was accompanied by automatic qualification for Brazil 2027, marking an important return to the global stage for the Indomitable Lionesses.
A Heavyweight Falls
Few teams are as closely associated with African women’s football success as Nigeria. The Super Falcons have dominated large periods of WAFCON history and entered this tournament once again among the favourites. Cameroon, however, had shown throughout the group stage that they possessed the organisation and confidence required to challenge the continent’s traditional powers. That belief was evident in Casablanca.
Cameroon protected their advantage through a tense contest and resisted Nigeria’s attempts to find a route back into the match. When the final whistle arrived, the celebrations reflected the magnitude of what had been achieved.
Nigeria were out.
Cameroon were heading to the semi-finals and to Brazil.
Malawi Continue to Rewrite Their Story
Elsewhere, Malawi’s remarkable WAFCON campaign has become one of the defining narratives of the tournament.
The Scorchers arrived at their first continental championship without the historical reputation enjoyed by many of their rivals, but quickly demonstrated that they were capable of competing with Africa’s best.
Led by a generation that includes internationally recognised attacking talent, Malawi progressed from the group stage as Group C winners before facing Ghana in a quarter-final carrying enormous consequences.
A place in the semi-finals would mean more than another chapter in an extraordinary debut campaign. It would deliver qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup and represent one of the greatest achievements in Malawi’s football history.
The Road to Brazil
WAFCON 2026 is serving two purposes: determining Africa’s new champion and identifying the continent’s representatives at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The four semi-finalists qualify automatically for Brazil.
For the nations eliminated in the quarter-finals, however, another opportunity remains. CAF’s tournament schedule includes World Cup qualifying play-off matches on August 13, giving defeated quarter-finalists another route toward the FIFA inter-confederation play-offs.
That keeps the World Cup ambitions of several major African nations alive even after their hopes of lifting the WAFCON trophy have ended.
A New Champion Will Rise
The significance of Cameroon’s victory extends beyond one quarter-final. Nigeria’s elimination has changed the complexion of the tournament completely.
For the remaining contenders, a door that has so often been occupied by Africa’s most successful women’s football nation is suddenly open.
Cameroon now have the opportunity to turn World Cup qualification into a challenge for the continental crown, while the other surviving nations can look toward the closing week of WAFCON knowing history is within reach.
The semi-finals are scheduled for August 12 in Rabat, before the World Cup qualifying play-offs take place the following day. The tournament will conclude with the final on August 16.
For Cameroon, one major objective has already been achieved. For Nigeria, attention must now shift from defending an African title to preserving their hopes of reaching Brazil.
And for WAFCON 2026, the message after another dramatic knockout night is unmistakable:
Africa will have a new champion.
