World Athletics U20 Championships Open the Door to Tomorrow’s Olympic Stars
The world’s most promising young athletes have arrived in Eugene, Oregon, as the World Athletics U20 Championships return to the iconic Hayward Field from August 5–9, 2026, bringing together the next generation of track and field talent from across the globe.
The five-day championship, often regarded as the launching pad for future Olympic and World Championship stars, will feature more than 1,700 athletes representing nearly 200 countries. Competitors aged 16 to 19 will battle for medals across sprint, middle-distance, long-distance, relay, hurdles, jumps, throws and combined events in one of athletics’ most prestigious junior competitions.

History has shown that success at the World U20 Championships frequently marks the beginning of remarkable international careers.
Olympic champions, world medalists and record holders have all used this stage as a springboard. Botswana sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo, for example, captured World U20 titles before becoming an Olympic gold medalist, reinforcing the event’s reputation as a showcase for tomorrow’s global superstars.
Hayward Field Welcomes the World Again
Widely considered one of the world’s premier athletics venues, Hayward Field returns to the international spotlight after previously hosting the World U20 Championships in 2014 and the senior World Athletics Championships in 2022.

Innovation on the Programme
The 2026 edition will also make history by introducing the Mixed 4×100 metres Relay to the World Athletics U20 Championships for the first time.
The championship opens with an exciting schedule that includes qualification rounds in the sprints and field events, while the first gold medals will be awarded on the opening evening. The final two days promise an action-packed programme featuring multiple championship finals across both track and field disciplines.
Athletes to Watch
While several of the world’s brightest young stars are expected to shine in Eugene, the championships will also be missing one of its biggest names. Australian sprint sensation Gout Gout, who had been among the headline attractions, was forced to withdraw after suffering a serious hamstring injury during training, ending hopes of a highly anticipated appearance in Oregon. His absence opens the door for a new generation of sprinters and emerging talents eager to announce themselves on the world stage.
