ATLANTA, United States – On a night that will be remembered far beyond the result on the scoreboard, three American officials took another major step in breaking barriers in world football.
Referee Tori Penso, alongside assistant referees Brooke Mayo and Kathryn Nesbitt, made history by becoming the first all-woman refereeing team from the United States to officiate a men’s FIFA World Cup match.

Their appointment for the Group A encounter between Czechia and South Africa was not simply another assignment. It was a moment that reflected years of progress in women’s officiating and underlined FIFA’s growing commitment to increasing opportunities for women at the highest level of the game.
The match itself ended in a 1-1 draw after South Africa converted a second-half penalty to earn a valuable point. Yet, as the final whistle sounded, the attention quickly turned to the significance of the three officials who had confidently overseen one of the tournament’s most historic occasions.
For Penso, the appointment was another remarkable chapter in a refereeing journey that has taken her to the pinnacle of international football. The Florida native previously officiated the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup final and has consistently been regarded as one of the game’s leading referees.

Mayo and Nesbitt are equally respected figures in officiating circles and have formed part of several groundbreaking assignments alongside Penso in recent years. Their selection for the World Cup was widely viewed as recognition of both their experience and their performances on the international stage.
The significance of the moment extended well beyond Atlanta.
For decades, women have fought for greater representation in every area of football, from the pitch to the technical area and the referee’s dressing room. While major progress has been made in women’s participation as players and coaches, opportunities in elite officiating have often been slower to arrive.
Wednesday’s historic appointment offered another powerful reminder that football’s traditional boundaries continue to be challenged.
It was also a moment of inspiration.
Across the world, young girls dreaming of careers in football saw three women take charge of the sport’s biggest stage with authority, confidence and professionalism.
History in football is often measured by goals, trophies and unforgettable victories.
This time, history belonged to the officials.
And for Tori Penso, Brooke Mayo and Kathryn Nesbitt, their names will forever be associated with another landmark moment in the continuing evolution of the global game.
