They Never Gave Up Now Afghan Women’s Team Is Back on the World Stage

In a historic move, FIFA has officially allowed Afghan Women United a team made up of Afghan female refugees, to compete as the Afghanistan women’s national team without needing approval from the Taliban-controlled football federation.

Since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, women’s sports were banned in Afghanistan, forcing the national team to shut down. Many players fled the country, seeking safety across Australia, Europe, and the Middle East. The team hasn’t played an official match since then.

For years, FIFA insisted the team needed recognition from Afghanistan’s football authorities something that was never going to happen under Taliban rule. But after more than three years of pressure and campaigning by players and supporters, that stance has finally changed.

Former captain Khalida Popal said this moment proves the team’s fight was worth it, calling it a victory not just for the players, but for Afghan women everywhere. She described the team as a symbol of resilience, especially for women still inside Afghanistan who are unable to play.

Although it’s too late for the 2027 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, the team can now aim for the 2028 Olympic qualifiers. Their return to international football is expected as early as June.

After years of exile, different team names, and uncertainty they can finally represent their country again.
